Tyrese Haliburton scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Rasir Bolton added 22 points as Iowa State rolled to a 104-89 win over Alabama on Thursday in a losers' bracket game at the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas.
The Cyclones (4-2), who went on a huge run over the final six minutes of the first half, move on to a Friday matchup against No. 13 Seton Hall. The Crimson Tide (2-4) fall into the seventh-place game against Southern Miss.
Iowa State trailed 32-31 with 6:22 to play in the first half but scored 20 of the final 24 points of the half. The Crimson Tide never got closer than nine points after the 14:11 mark of the second half as the Cyclones poured it on in the final minutes.
Prentiss Nixon scored 15 points, and Michael Jacobson and George Conditt added 11 points each for the Cyclones, who won for the third time in their past four games. Iowa State outshot Alabama 51.7 percent to 41.9 percent in the game and won despite being outrebounded 44-35.
Alabama's John Petty Jr. led all scorers with 34 points, hitting six of his nine 3-point shots and adding 12 rebounds despite playing with an ankle injury he sustained in the first half. The Crimson Tide, who have lost three of their past four contests, also got 10 points from James Bolden.
Iowa State blitzed the Crimson Tide in the first half, taking a 51-36 lead to the break behind 50 percent shooting and 12 points from Bolton. The Cyclones were 9 of 17 from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes and forced 10 Alabama turnovers in the half.
The Crimson Tide were able to stay within shouting distance because of Petty's 20 points in the half.
