No. 19 North Carolina 70, No. 13 Louisville 60: Brice Johnson scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half as the Tar Heels rallied past the Cardinals in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament at Greensboro, N.C.
Marcus Paige contributed 13 points, five assists and four steals for North Carolina (23-10), which will play top-seeded Virginia in Friday’s semifinals. Justin Jackson had 10 points, Kennedy Meeks added nine after missing the second-round game with an illness and Johnson collected a team-high seven rebounds for the fifth-seeded Tar Heels.
Terry Rozier led the way with 20 points on 6-of-20 shooting from the field for fourth-seeded Louisville (24-8), which made its first appearance in an ACC tournament. Wayne Blackshear had 18 points while Montrezl Harrell added 14 points and 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double in the last nine games for the Cardinals.
Louisville led by as many as 10 after Blackshear’s 3-pointer with 5:15 left in the first half and held North Carolina to 37.1 percent shooting before settling for a 37-32 edge at intermission. Paige drained a 3-pointer and Johnson scored the next six after halftime as the Tar Heels quickly pushed their way in front.
Neither team could manage more than a three-point lead until Johnson and Meeks each had two baskets as North Carolina scored eight straight for a 64-57 lead with 3:49 left. Blackshear drained a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to four, but Paige and Jackson each made two free throws to extend the lead to eight to seal it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cardinals saw their 10-game winning streak in conference tournament games come to an end. … Paige increased his career total to 210 career 3-pointers, one behind Jeff Lebo for fifth on North Carolina’s all-time list. … The Tar Heels made 5-of-11 from 3-point range while Louisville was only 4-of-22.
