Third-ranked North Carolina went into the locker room on a hot streak and resumed it after halftime, using a 17-0 run that spanned the break to roll to a 73-56 home win over Miami on Tuesday
The Tar Heels (15-2, 2-0 ACC) have won nine straight -- all at home -- to run their building-record win streak at the Dean E. Smith Center to 28 games.
The teams traded baskets early, but North Carolina reeled off a pair of 8-0 runs, the latter of which gave it the lead for good, and closed the half with nine straight points. UNC scored the first eight points of the second half to put it out of reach.
The Hurricanes (9-6, 0-2 ACC) did a nice job of slowing down North Carolina's dominant frontcourt in the first half, but Tyler Zeller (16 points, 10 rebounds) and John Henson (11 points, 14 rebounds) rounded into form in the second half to register double-doubles.
The Tar Heels' backcourt picked up the slack early, as Dexter Strickland scored 14 points and Kendall Marshall added 12 points and seven rebounds. Still, the Tar Heels failed to top 80 points for the first time in nine games.
North Carolina's guards also took Miami leading scorer Malcolm Grant out of the game. Grant, who had made a 3-pointer in a school-record 35 consecutive games, was 0 for 6 from 3-point range and scored five points, matching his season-low.
Both teams struggled from long range, combining to go 5 for 32 from 3-point range.
North Carolina has won 17 of 19 all-time meetings. Miami hasn't beaten the Tar Heels since 2006.
