DENVER -- On Friday night, the San Antonio Spurs rested six players accounting for 72 percent of their point production, and their starting point guard was 20 years older than Denver's. Naturally, they had the Nuggets right where they wanted them.
But Denver finished the night on a 10-2 run, and San Antonio committed two crucial turnovers in the final 30 seconds as the Nuggets defeated the Spurs, 102-98. The Spurs (65-14) lost for the second straight time, the first time they've dropped consecutive games in 2015-16. Locked into the Western Conference's second seed, the Spurs will host top-seed Golden State on Sunday. San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said he plans to use his entire roster for that game.
The Spurs lost at Golden State on Thursday night, and then arrived in Denver in the early morning hours. Popovich sat four starters -- LaMarcus Aldridge, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker -- and two reserves Boris Diaw and Manu Ginobli. Winning would have been nice Friday, but it did not appear to be the most pressing concern the Spurs had.
"We're locked into the position we're in, so Pop's going to do what he's always done and make sure we are fresh and healthy for the start of the playoffs and on through," said forward Tim Duncan, who led the Spurs with 21 points. "These games don't matter as much as they usually do. We just need to be ready to rock when the playoffs start. I think we'll be ready for that."
Duncan called Sunday's date with San Antonio another chance to learn about the Warriors' style and adjust to it.
"We're going to do the best we can to execute and control what we can control, especially down the stretch like tonight where we had a couple of turnovers and a couple of mistakes, and that's going to be the important part," Duncan said.
Those two mistakes came at the hands of Denver guard Gary Harris. With 30 seconds to go and the game tied at 98, Harris deflected a Spurs' pass and was immediately fouled by Kevin Martin. Harris sank two free throws to put the Nuggets ahead.
On San Antonio's next possession, Harris stole a pass and dunked the ball with 10.3 seconds to go. San Antonio's Patty Mills missed a 3 on the Spurs' next possession, and the Spurs were content to let time elapse instead of fouling after Denver's Jusuf Nurkic grabbed the rebound.
Lottery-bound Denver (33-47) snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Spurs, and a three-game losing streak overall. The Nuggets are the only team to beat the Spurs and Warriors this season.
Nurkic scored a career-high 21 points and Emmanuel Mudiay added 20.
"That is a pretty cool accomplishment, but we still have a lot of ways to improve," Harris said. "But I am just happy the way everyone is playing and progressing.
The Nuggets have already eclipsed last season's win total. They outscored an opponent in the second half on Friday for the first time in 12 games.
San Antonio started Andre Miller at point guard. He's 40 years old. Mudiay is 20. Duncan, who tied Jason Kidd for seventh place all-time in games played at 1,391, is 18 years older than the Nuggets' Nurkic.
Despite San Antonio's makeshift lineup, Nuggets coach Michael Malone called it a great win for his team.
"I don't care if they rested most of their starters, we still beat them," Malone said.
"I would have rather won," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
Duncan and Martin echoed their coach, both calling the night frustrating because of the loss. But with the playoffs nearing, they'll soon move on.
"These guys logged a lot of minutes this year, and we have a great plan going forward to be full strength for the playoffs, and that's the most important thing," Martin said.
"I think (Sunday) is important from the aspect as far as us needing to work on some things, and get ready for the playoffs that start next weekend. Outside of that, it's just another game."
NOTES: Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said going undefeated at home this season is "absolutely meaningless. ... What does that get you if you're undefeated? Does it win you anything? That's why it's meaningless." The Spurs have won 48 consecutive regular-season games at the AT&T Center, including all 39 so far 2015-16. Golden State holds the record with 54. Boston snapped the Warriors' streak on April 1. San Antonio's streak is the second-longest. ... Miller spent seven seasons with Denver. ... Popovich said F LaMarcus Aldridge is fine after he dislocated his right pinky Thursday night. Popovich said trainers struggled to pop the finger back into place, but it's not expected to be a problem. ... Spurs F Boris Diaw (right adductor) did not play Friday, and Popovich said he did not know if Diaw will play Sunday ... Nuggets F/C Nikola Jokic made his first start of the season at power forward. He has made 52 starts at center. ... Denver F Darrell Arthur was not with Nuggets on Friday so he could attend to a family matter. Malone said he hopes Arthur will return soon, but he did not say when that will be.
