Knicks 100, Celtics 85: J.R. Smith scored 32 points and Carmelo Anthony had 29 as visiting New York won its fifth straight and sent Boston to its fifth consecutive loss.
Smith and Anthony combined to take 54 of the Knicks' 90 shots and all but four of their 18 free throws. None of their teammates scored in double figures as New York moved into second place in the Eastern Conference, percentage points ahead of Indiana.
Jeff Green led five Celtics in double figures with 19 points. Boston played its second straight game without starters Kevin Garnett and Courtney Lee, who are hampered by ankle injuries.
The Celtics cut a 14-point halftime deficit down to 69-62 on Paul Pierce's layup with 5:20 left in the third quarter. However, they went without a basket until Jason Terry's 3-pointer with six seconds left in the frame, only to see Smith answer with one of his own at the buzzer to make it 84-69 entering the fourth.
Boston never threatened again as it lost its second straight home game to the Knicks after winning 11 straight against its rivals at TD Garden. The Celtics committed 20 turnovers to the Knicks' eight.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York played its seventh straight game without All-Star center Tyson Chandler (neck). ... The Knicks can win the season series for the first time since 2003-04 when the teams meet Sunday in New York. ... Paul Pierce had 16 points, six assists and six turnovers for the Celtics.
