Second baseman Trea Turner's errant throw allowed Brandon Belt to score the game-winning run with two outs in the 11th inning Friday night as the San Francisco Giants opened their showdown series with the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers with a walk-off, 3-2 victory.
The Giants (86-49) regained a one-game lead over the Dodgers (85-50) atop the National League West, with two more head-to-heads remaining this weekend.
After Mike Yastrzemski started the 11th on second base, Evan Phillips (1-1), the 11th and final available Dodgers pitcher on a night when scheduled starter David Price had to be scratched because of an arm injury, struck out Darin Ruf.
Phillips then walked Belt intentionally and walked Kris Bryant on a full count to load the bases with one out.
Phillips got Alex Dickerson to hit a grounder to shortstop that resulted in a force out at the plate. The next batter, Buster Posey, hit a grounder to Turner, whose throw to first was high and pulled Will Smith off the base, giving the Giants their third walk-off win of the season.
Jarlin Garcia (6-3), the sixth Giants pitcher, was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 11th. San Francisco shortstop Brandon Crawford helped keep the Dodgers off the scoreboard in that inning, throwing out Justin Turner at the plate.
The winning uprising came after the Dodgers, down 1-0, forced extra innings thanks to a two-out RBI single by Chris Taylor in the ninth.
Each team tallied once in the 10th.
Trea Turner had a sacrifice fly and Crawford replied with a run-scoring single in the 10th, each plating inherited baserunners, to send the game deeper into the night.
Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits. He walked three and struck out five and was in line for the win before Jake McGee blew the lead in the ninth.
The Giants got an RBI single from Austin Slater in the third inning.
Corey Seager collected four hits for the Dodgers, whose walk-off defeat was their ninth of the year.
