Arizona's four-run rally in the seventh inning, which included San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy's ejection, doomed the Giants in a 7-0 loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday night in Phoenix.
It was the first meeting of the season for the National League West rivals, who resume their three-game series at Chase Field on Saturday night.
A bases-clearing triple by Eduardo Escobar highlighted the seventh for the Diamondbacks, who sent nine batters to the plate in the inning.
One of the batters, Jarrod Dyson, was hit by a pitch on his left hand while trying to bunt. Home plate umpire Andy Fletcher ruled the ball did not hit the bat and Dyson was sent to first base to load the bases against reliever Derek Holland.
Bochy argued with Fletcher, who gave Bochy his 77th career ejection in his 25 years as a manager. Bochy is retiring after this season.
Dyson's hit-by-pitch occurred after a walk by Alex Avila and single by Wilmer Flores to lead off the inning. Escobar then hit his third triple of the season, a line drive to the right field corner.
David Peralta, who belted a home run in the fourth inning, reached on a fielding error by first baseman Brandon Belt, allowing Escobar to score to give Arizona its 7-0 lead.
Four Arizona pitchers combined on the shutout. Starting right-hander Merrill Kelly, a hometown rookie who played at Phoenix Desert Mountain High School and Arizona State, got the win to improve to 4-4, allowing six hits while striking out four and walking one in 5 1/3 innings.
Yoshihisa Hirano, Andrew Chafin and Jimmie Sherfy combined to allow only three hits in 3 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
Peralta put the Diamondbacks on the board first with a solo home run with one out in the fourth inning. The first-pitch drive off San Francisco starter Jeff Samardzija (2-2) to center field was Peralta's seventh home run of the year. Peralta is 2 for 17 in his career against Samardzija, and both hits are home runs.
San Francisco tried to rally in the sixth, loading the bases with one out and chasing Kelly. After Buster Posey, who was activated from the concussion list before the game, and Belt singled, Pablo Sandoval walked to load the bases. That's when Hirano was summoned, and he struck out Brandon Crawford and got Kevin Pillar to fly out to right field to end the threat.
