Phillies 7, Marlins 3: Ryan Howard had three hits and three RBIs in his return to the lineup and rookie Tyler Cloyd pitched seven strong innings to lead visiting Philadelphia.
Delmon Young hit a solo home run and had two RBIs while Domonic Brown also drove in a pair for the Phillies, who matched a season high with 15 hits and welcomed back Howard after he missed the last two games and received a cortisone shot for his ailing left knee. Cloyd (1-0) allowed two runs and eight hits.
Miami rookie Jose Fernandez allowed one run in five innings before being lifted for a pinch hitter and has yielded one run in 18 career frames against Philadelphia. Duane Below (0-1) pitched the sixth and took the loss in his Marlins debut while Jordan Brown, Juan Pierre and Justin Ruggiano drove in runs.
Young fouled off two straight 2-2 pitches before crushing Fernandez's next offering over the left-center wall in the fourth inning. Miami tied it in the fifth when Placido Polanco led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on pinch hitter Brown's sacrifice fly - his first at-bat in a Marlins uniform.
Howard led off the sixth inning with a single and advanced to third on Michael Young's double to the center field wall before scoring on Domonic Brown's grounder. Howard's two-run line-drive single to right with the bases loaded and none out in the seventh made it 4-1 and started the Phillies' four-run frame.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Phillies 2B Chase Utley was a late scratch after he felt what the team called "discomfort on his right ribcage" during batting practice. ... Philadelphia C Carlos Ruiz was placed on the 15-day disabled list and is expected to miss 3-to-4 weeks with a hamstring injury. ... Marlins RHP Ryan Webb allowed two runs and three hits in the seventh inning to snap his scoreless innings streak at 17 1/3.
