Brandon Phillips belted his fourth-career grand slam as the Cincinnati Reds erupted for a 10-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday.
Joey Votto homered and drove in two runs for the Reds (57-46), who moved one half-game ahead of St. Louis in the NL Central. Cincinnati outscored Milwaukee 24-9 during the three-game series.
The Reds trailed 2-0 after five innings, but Cincinnati went ahead on Miguel Cairo’s two-run double, which came during a five-run sixth.
Phillips then put the game out of reach with a grand slam off Carlos Villanueva in a five-run eighth. Votto capped the scoring with his 26th home run of the season later in the frame.
The outburst helped Travis Wood (1-1) earn his first win. Wood allowed two runs and five hits in five innings. The 23-year-old left-hander struck out six and walked one, departing after throwing 82 pitches.
Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy each drove in a run for Milwaukee, which was held without a home run for the first time in 17 games.
Brewers starter Chris Narveson (8-7) took the loss. He held the Reds scoreless through five innings, but left with runners on the corners in the sixth. The left-hander was charged with three runs and six hits in five-plus innings.
