Jimmy Vesey scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:15 remaining in the third period, and the host New York Rangers avoided consecutive losses for the first time this season by rallying for a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday night.
In a game where they saw 25 shots get blocked and 18 other attempts miss the net, the Rangers bounced back from their most lopsided loss through their first 20 games by capitalizing on a fortuitous bounce.
After killing off a penalty to Alexis Lafreniere, the Rangers moved the puck into their offensive zone. Lafreniere got a pass from Vincent Trocheck, and Vesey scored his fifth goal by backhanding the rebound into the net as the puck bounced over Detroit goaltender Ville Husso.
The Red Wings challenged for a possible high stick, but Vesey's tally was upheld following a brief consultation with replay officials in Toronto.
Vesey scored after K'Andre Miller tied it with a one-timer from one knee in the high slot off a cross-ice pass from Mika Zibanejad with 10:46 left.
Artemi Panarin also scored for the Rangers, who pulled off their seventh comeback win of the season in defenseman Adam Fox's return from a leg injury that cost him 10 games.
New York's Igor Shesterkin made 25 saves, including a few timely stops during a late Detroit power play.
Moritz Seider and Robby Fabbri scored 23 seconds apart in the second period as the Red Wings saw a three-game winning streak stopped and took their second loss in New York this month.
Husso stopped 38 shots as the Red Wings lost for the second time in 11 games when taking a lead into the third.
The Rangers opened the scoring 4:37 into the second by capitalizing on a Detroit miscue by Shayne Gothisbehere.
Miller stole Gostisbehere's clearing attempt in the neutral zone, and Panarin finished the sequence with a shot from the middle of the left circle.
Nearly four minutes later, Seider tied it while Panarin was serving a roughing penalty. His shot from the middle of the slot sailed by Shesterkin, who was screened in front by Andrew Copp, and the Red Wings quickly gained the lead thanks to a New York turnover.
After New York defenseman Braden Schneider misplayed a clearing attempt, the Red Wings capitalized on the turnover. Fabbri scored on a shot from between the faceoff circles that eluded Shesterkin.
