Lucas Giolito pitched six hitless innings and the visiting Chicago White Sox recorded a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night to extend their winning streak to a season-high four games.
Seby Zavala homered in consecutive at-bats off Clarke Schmidt (2-6) as the White Sox also won for the fifth time in six games.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa ended Chicago's no-hit bid with a two-out RBI double in the seventh against Joe Kelly on a ball that dropped between center fielder Luis Robert Jr. and left fielder Andrew Benintendi, allowing Willie Calhoun to score.
After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced the team was placing outfielder Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list. The reigning American League Most Valuable Player bruised his right toe crashing into the fence to make a catch in right field at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night and had not played since.
Coming off two of his shortest starts of the season, Giolito (5-4) struck out seven and walked three while pitching under a hazy sky due to remnants of wildfires in Canada reaching the New York area.
Giolito threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of the 21 hitters he faced and 58 of his 100 pitches were strikes.
Giolito threw 23 pitches in the first, when he issued consecutive two-out walks to Anthony Rizzo and Josh Donaldson. He ended the inning by fanning rookie Anthony Volpe on a slider.
Following Zavala's solo home run in the third that gave the White Sox a 1-0 lead, Giolito opened the fourth by getting called third strikes on Rizzo and Donaldson. After Volpe walked and stole his first base since May 13, Calhoun grounded out.
After Kelly completed the seventh, Kendall Graveman pitched a perfect eighth. Liam Hendriks allowed a homer to Donaldson on his first pitch of the ninth before getting three straight groundouts for his first save since his return from after a battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Zavala had his second career multi-homer game by following his third-inning home run with one in the fifth. He drove in all three of Chicago's runs.
Schmidt allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.
