American League 5, National League 3: New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter went 2-for-2 and scored a run in his 14th and final All-Star Game while MVP Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels drove in a pair of runs, including the tiebreaker in the fifth inning as the host American League captured the 85th Midsummer Classic at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins.
Jeter, who received a thunderous ovation during pregame introductions as well as prior to his first at-bat - which was introduced by a recording of the late Yankees public address announcer Bob Sheppard, led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored the game's first run on a triple by Trout. The 40-year-old shortstop, who is retiring at the end of the season, added a leadoff single in the third to finish his All-Star Game career with a .481 average (13-for-27) - the second-highest of all time.
Two-time reigning league MVP Miguel Cabrera of Detroit belted a two-run homer off St. Louis' Adam Wainwright in the first for a 3-0 lead and Trout snapped a deadlock with an RBI double against Pat Neshek of the Cardinals four innings later for the AL, which has won eight of the last 11 contests. Houston's Jose Altuve also drove in a run, Max Scherzer of the Tigers notched the win and Minnesota's Glen Perkins worked a perfect ninth for the save.
Milwaukee's Jonathan Lucroy recorded a pair of run-scoring doubles and Philadelphia's Chase Utley also had an RBI for the NL, which leads the series 43-40-2. Aramis Ramirez of the Brewers added two hits and scored a run while Neshek took the loss after allowing two runs and three hits in one-third of an inning.
The NL, which stranded a runner at third against Seattle's Felix Hernandez in the opening frame, reached Boston's Jon Lester for two runs in the second to cut the deficit to 3-2. Ramirez delivered a one-out single before Utley and Lucroy ripped back-to-back RBI doubles.
Lucroy, who was chosen to start at catcher for the NL after leading vote-getter Yadier Molina of St. Louis went down with a thumb injury last week, knotted the contest in the fourth. Utley was hit with a pitch by Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox with two outs before Lucroy drilled a shot off the wall in right field to plate pinch-runner Dee Gordon of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Neshek retired the first batter he faced in the fifth before Oakland's Derek Norris and Alexei Ramirez of the White Sox singled. Trout followed with a double down the third-base line that scored Norris and Altuve lifted a sacrifice fly off Washington's Tyler Clippard to create a two-run advantage.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jeter trails only Charlie Gehringer and Ted Kluszewski, who share the all-time record as both finished their careers with a .500 average in Midsummer Classics. ... Jeter became the oldest player to record at least two hits in an All-Star Game, breaking the mark previously held by Carl Yastrzemski (39). ... Twins legend Rod Carew threw out the ceremonial first pitch, while Tony Award-winning actress Idina Menzel sang The Star-Spangled Banner. ... Seattle's Robinson Cano became the first AL second baseman to start five consecutive All-Star Games since Roberto Alomar from 1996-2000. ... Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen led off the game with a hard grounder on which Jeter made an outstanding dive to his left to field the ball. However, McCutchen beat Jeter's throw to first by a split-second for an infield single. ... Of the 11 pitchers used by the AL, Lester was the only one not to record a strikeout.
