Geno Smith threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 38 seconds remaining as the Seattle Seahawks defeated the visiting Cleveland Browns 24-20 Sunday afternoon.
The win, combined with the San Francisco 49ers' third straight loss, left Seattle (5-2) alone atop the NFC West.
Smith drove the Seahawks 57 yards in five plays for the winning score after Julian Love intercepted a tipped pass with 1:57 left. The go-ahead points were the first for Seattle since the opening quarter.
Smith completed passes of 7 yards to Tyler Lockett and 9 yards to DK Metcalf before hitting tight end Noah Fant for 27 yards down the right sideline. An incomplete pass and a Cleveland penalty for too many men on the field gave the Seahawks second-and-5 at the 9-yard line, and Smith threw a screen pass into the left flat for Smith-Njigba, who got a block from Metcalf to help him sneak inside the pylon.
Smith was 23-of-37 passing for 254 yards, with two TDs and two interceptions. Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet combined for 119 yards rushing on 13 carries and Lockett made eight receptions for 81 yards and a TD.
P.J. Walker, starting for the injured Deshaun Watson (strained right rotator cuff), failed in his bid to guide the Browns (4-3) to a third consecutive comeback victory. He completed 15 of 31 passes for 248 yards with one touchdown, but threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.
The Seahawks scored on their first three possessions to take a 17-7 lead in the first quarter.
Rookie receiver Jake Bobo ran for a 3-yard TD on an end-around to give the Seahawks a 7-0 lead. Smith then scrambled and hit Lockett for a 12-yard touchdown pass in the back-left corner of the end zone to make it 14-0.
The Browns responded with a four-play, 75-yard drive, with P.J. Walker hitting tight end David Njoku for an 18-yard scoring strike up the left seam.
Jason Myers kicked a 32-yard field goal with 59 seconds left in the first to make it 17-7.
The lone tally of the second quarter came on a 1-yard run by Kareem Hunt, pulling the Browns within 17-14.
Dustin Hopkins kicked 25- and 27-yard field goals in the third quarter to give Cleveland a 20-17 advantage.
