Sammy Zeglinski scored 20 points as No. 24 Virginia survived a scare from winless Towson, holding on for a 57-50 home victory and sending the Tigers to their 32nd straight defeat.
The Cavaliers (12-1), who never led by more than eight points, had just a two-point lead, 44-42, before a Mike Scott jumper with 5:20 remaining began an 8-3 surge that stretched the margin to seven with 54 seconds to go.
Towson (0-13), closing in on the Division I record of 34 consecutive losses set by Sacramento State between 1997 and 1999, opened the game with a 10-2 run but never led again after Virginia scored the final eight points of the half to take a 24-16 advantage into the break.
Towson shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half but Virginia was able to maintain the upper hand at the foul line, making 18 of 26 attempts while the Tigers were just 5-for-10 on free throws at the other end.
Joe Harris finished with 17 points for Virginia. Kris Walden paced Towson in defeat with 15 points.
