Matt Humphrey scored 18 points and Dennis Clifford added 16 points and six rebounds as Boston College held off Sacred Heart, 83-73, on Wednesday.
Ryan Anderson chipped in 13 points and Lonnie Jackson scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Eagles (5-7), who have won three straight after taking just two of their first nine contests.
Rebuilding a team around 10 new players, Boston College coach Steve Donahue is still massaging his lineup to try to find the best combination of youngsters. Against the Pioneers, the Eagles worked the inside-outside combination of Humphrey, a junior transfer from Oregon, and freshmen Clifford and Anderson.
After falling behind, 62-59, with less than eight minutes left, Clifford hit a pair of free throws, blocked a shot and grabbed a rebound to spark a 13-5 run over the next five minutes. Humphrey and Jackson each buried a 3-pointer in the spurt.
Another 3-pointer by Jackson was followed by a layup from Anderson, giving Boston College a 77-69 edge with 1:32 remaining.
Shane Gibson scored 25 points to lead Sacred Heart (6-8), which has dropped five of six.
