Juan Fernandez made an off-balance shot with less than a second left and seventh-seeded Temple won its first NCAA tournament game since 2001 with a 66-64 victory over No. 10 seed Penn State on Thursday in Tucson, Ariz.
Ramone Moore scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half, and Fernandez finished with a season-high 23 points for Temple (26-7), which will play No. 2 seed San Diego State in a West Regional third-round game on Saturday.
Talor Battle scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, for Penn State (19-15), which was making its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2001. Tim Frazier added 15 points and David Jackson finished with 14 for the Nittany Lions, who entered the tournament having won seven of their last 10 games.
Lavoy Allen grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Owls, who led 35-33 at halftime. Neither team led by more than four points in the second half, and the game appeared headed for overtime after Battleās 3-pointer tied the game at 64 with 16 seconds left.
The Nittany Lions played most of the second half without second-leading scorer Jeff Brooks, who reinjured the same shoulder that he dislocated in early February. The senior forward, averaging 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds, finished with six points and two rebounds after exiting with 18:53 left in the second half.
