Joe Harris led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds, as host Virginia took down rival Virginia Tech, 61-54, on Saturday.
Mustapha Farrakhan added 16 points for the Cavaliers (13-13, 4-8 ACC), who went 11 of 23 from beyond the arc.
Malcolm Delaney scored 22 points for the Hokies (17-8, 7-5), who saw their at-large hopes take a hit with their second loss in as many road games.
Virginia was up, 28-23, at the half and carried that momentum through the break, bursting out of the locker room with an 11-2 run highlighted by three 3-pointers. The Cavaliers would stretch the lead to as much as 44-29 when Sammy Zeglinski drained another 3-pointer with 11:59 left in the game.
Virginia Tech crawled back slowly, chipping the deficit to 45-42 with 7:46 left after Delaney hit back-to-back 3-pointers. But Virginia did not fold, getting a 3-pointer from Farrakhan to push it back to 48-42 and locking down on the defensive end the rest of the way.
