Yankees 4, Diamondbacks 2: Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead three-run homer as host New York took the interleague series opener from Arizona.
Ivan Nova (1-1) allowed two runs and seven hits in five innings to pick up the win and Mariano Rivera - the last major leaguer to wear the No. 42 on a regular basis - worked a perfect ninth to earn the save as the Yankees celebrated Jackie Robinson Day.
Cody Ross had two hits and an RBI and Miguel Montero added a sacrifice fly in the third for the Diamondbacks, who were kicking off a nine-game road trip.
Brandon McCarthy (0-2) started for Arizona and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in each of the first two innings but could not wiggle out of trouble after allowing the first two hitters to reach in the fourth. Cano came up with one out and blasted a 3-2 changeup into the stands in right to put New York on top.
The Yankees took a moment after the third inning to play Fenway Park staple “Sweet Caroline” as a tribute to victims of the bombing in Boston.
GAME NOTEBOOK: McCarthy was charged with three runs on nine hits in four innings and owns a 7.47 ERA through three starts after signing with Arizona in the off-season. … The Diamondbacks placed 2B Aaron Hill (broken hand) on the 15-day disabled list and reinstated INF Didi Gregorius from the DL. … New York LHP Andy Pettitte (back spasms) threw 40 pitches in the bullpen Tuesday and is in line to return to the rotation Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays.
