Brad Marchand scored his second goal of the game 34 seconds into overtime to propel the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 win over the host Montreal Canadiens on Monday night.

After forcing a turnover in his own defensive zone, Marchand worked his way back up ice, took a drop feed from Erik Haula and tucked in a backhander after deking Montreal goaltender Jake Allen.

Boston, which had 46 shots on net, has won-back-to-back games and is now 12-2-1 in its past 15.

Bruins defenseman Connor Clifton tied the score with 2:59 left in regulation, jumping into the play and slotting home a cross-ice feed from Craig Smith.

It was Clifton's first goal in 31 games and ensured the second multiple-point game of his NHL career, as he also assisted on Marchand's first-period goal.

Haula had two assists and Jeremy Swayman made 26 saves in the victory.

David Savard and Joel Armia scored for Montreal, which fell to 4-3-3 in its past 10 games. Allen stopped 43 shots.

After coming out of the penalty box, Marchand put Boston ahead at 9:21 of the first period. He netted a second-chance opportunity off Haula's short feed in front.

Montreal evened the score 8:49 into the second as Savard took a feed from Alexander Romanov and slipped a backhander past Swayman after beating his defender in the slot.

The goal was the second of the season and first since Dec. 28 for Savard, the defenseman who was in his first game after a 20-game absence caused by an ankle injury. He hadn't played since Jan. 27.

Allen was at his best while helping keep Boston 0-for-4 on power plays. He robbed Marchand with a flashing glove save as time expired in the second period. The Bruins also came up empty on a man-up chance more than halfway through the third.

The Canadiens quickly jumped ahead for the first time at 1:13 of the third. Armia capitalized on a short-handed break off a Marchand turnover, beating Swayman high on the glove side.

Prior to Monday, the two Original Six rivals hadn't met in Montreal since Nov. 26, 2019, an 8-1 win for the Bruins.
