No. 7 Arizona 86, Washington 62: Stanley Johnson had 20 points and eight rebounds as the visiting Wildcats bounced back from their loss to Arizona State with a dominant effort against the Huskies.
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson collected 17 points and nine rebounds, Gabe York chipped in 13 points and Brandon Ashley had 11 for Arizona (21-3, 9-2 Pac-12), which shot 52.5 percent and won its fourth in a row against Washington. The Wildcats held a 37-30 edge in rebounds and remained tied with Utah atop the Pac-12 standings.
Washington (14-10, 3-9) lost its sixth straight despite Andrew Andrews’ 18 points and 11 rebounds. Shawn Kemp Jr. had 13 points but leading scorer Nigel Williams-Goss was held to seven points on 1-of-10 shooting for the Huskies, who shot 35.2 percent – including 6-of-20 from 3-point range.
Johnson scored five points during a 21-2 run midway through the first half and Arizona took a 43-24 lead into the break. The Wildcats, who allowed Arizona State to shoot 50 percent in last Saturday’s 81-78 loss, held the Huskies to 9-of-29 shooting in the opening period and extended their lead to 21 points early in the second half.
Andrews drained back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 65-54 with just over eight minutes left, but Arizona quickly regained control with a 16-2 run. Johnson and Hollis-Jefferson were a combined 14-of-20 shooting and T.J. McConnell added 10 points and 10 assists for the Wildcats, who were 20-of-26 from the foul line.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona backup PG Parker Jackson-Cartwright missed his third straight game due to a concussion. … Washington coach Lorenzo Romar was assessed a technical foul for arguing after Kemp was called for an offensive foul early in the second half. … Washington has lost six straight for the first time since 2001-02.
