Xavier 71, FGCU 57: Matt Stainbrook scored nine of his 11 points in the second half and added seven rebounds and four assists to lead the host Musketeers past the Eagles.

Remy Abell scored 13 points and Dee Davis added 12 for Xavier (9-3), which forced 16 turnovers while committing only seven against 16 assists. Myles Davis contributed eight points while James Farr registered seven points and nine rebounds as the Musketeers survived 9-of-17 shooting from the free-throw line.

Bernard Thompson and Julian DeBose scored 17 points apiece for FGCU (9-4), which has lost three of its last four games. Brett Comer, who along with Thompson were key contributors to the Eagles' Sweet 16 Cinderella run in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, recorded seven points and nine assists.

Xavier trailed only 2-0 and led by as many as 16 points in the first half en route to a 43-29 advantage at the break as nine different players scored. Farr capped a 20-9 run with a 3-pointer to give the Musketeers a 39-23 lead and added a dunk in the final minute as Farr, Abell and Dee Davis scored seven points apiece.

FGCU unleashed a 9-0 run - highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Thompson - to trim the deficit to 52-43 with 11:33 remaining. Stainbrook made a pair of free throws on the next possession and Xavier didn't let the lead slip below 10 the rest of the way.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Xavier, which entered the game 20th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.4, has led at halftime in every game this season. ... The Musketeers entered the game allowing an average of 28.9 points in the first half and 38.2 in the second. ... Xavier opens its Big East season by hosting Georgetown on Wednesday in a 10 p.m. ET start on New Year's Eve.
