St. John's 68, Seton Hall 67: Chris Obekpa hit a tiebreaking free throw with 2.1 seconds to play to give the Red Storm their first road win over the Pirates since Feb. 1998.
D'Angelo Harrison scored 12 points and Obepka, Rysheed Jordan and Sir'Dominic Pointer scored 10 points apiece to lift St. John's (16-9, 6-6 Big East) to its fourth consecutive victory and seventh win in eight games. JaKarr Sampson scored all nine of his points in the second half as the Red Storm shot 53.2 percent before a sparse crowd due to a snowstorm in New Jersey.
Fuquan Edwin led all scorers with 25 points for short-handed Seton Hall (13-12, 4-8), which played without suspended starters Brian Oliver and Gene Teague. Patrik Auda scored 15 points for the Pirates, who tumbled to their third loss in a row and suffered their second one-point defeat against St. John's this season.
The Red Storm used an 8-1 spurt to take their biggest lead at 59-53 at the eight-minute mark, but Seton Hall responded with a 12-2 burst - helped by consecutive goaltending calls on Obekpa - to surge ahead 67-63 with 3:10 to play. Two free throws by Pointer and a dunk by Sampson tied it before Jordan slipped a pass inside to Obekpa, who was fouled attempting a dunk but made his first foul shot despite shooting 40.7 percent from the line this season.
Edwin and Auda combined to score 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting in the first half to send Seton Hall to the locker room with a 38-33 edge. Sampson, who was scoreless in the opening 20 minutes, scored seven points during a 13-4 run to get the Red Storm back in the game.
