Stanford 83, California 70: Chasson Randle scored 20 points as the visiting Cardinal opened the second half with a 22-6 run and put a damper on the rival Golden Bears' Pac-12 title hopes by ending their seven-game winning streak.
Josh Huestis added 18 points and Aaron Bright scored 16 for Stanford (18-13, 9-9 Pac-12), which turned a three-point halftime lead into a 56-37 advantage on Randle's 3-pointer with 13:19 remaining. Randle was 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-5 from 3-point range in the contest that included seven ejections after a second-half fracas.
Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs scored 24 points apiece as California (20-10, 12-6) missed an opportunity to position itself better for the Pac-12 regular-season title after UCLA lost at Washington State 73-61 earlier Wednesday. Cobbs added six assists, but committed eight of California's 14 turnovers.
A melee occurred with 5:04 left after Crabbe and Aaron Bright got tangled up during a jump-ball situation. Five assistant coaches - four from Stanford - and one player from each team were ejected for leaving the bench area to join the fray, which did not reveal any punches thrown after a lengthy video review and yielded six technical fouls.
Stanford made 10 of 12 free throws - 6-for-6 from John Gage - and seven California turnovers helped the Cardinal take a 58-39 lead with 10:13 remaining. Crabbe and Cobb combined for all 14 Golden Bears points as California got within 66-53 with 7:08 left before Stanford went on a 6-0 run prior to the incident.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Golden Bears, who already wrapped up a first-round bye in the Pac-12 tournament, will need Oregon to lose at Colorado on Thursday and at Utah on Saturday, and UCLA to lose at Washington on Saturday, to share the regular-season title and earn the tournament's No. 1 seed. ... The Cardinal recorded their first sweep of the Golden Bears since 2008. ... Crabbe, the Pac-12's leading scorer at 18.6 points, increased his lead to five-tenths of a point over UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad, who scored 14 against Washington State.
