Villanova 60, Marquette 56: Darrun Hilliard scored 22 points as the host Wildcats won for the fifth time in their last six games and handed the Golden Eagles a critical Big East loss.
Ryan Arcidiacono and JayVaughn Pinkston each added 11 points for Villanova (18-10, 9-6 Big East), which forced 19 Marquette miscues and enjoyed a 17-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
Junior Cadougan had 12 points and was the only player to finish in double figures for the Golden Eagles (19-7, 10-4), who fell out of first place in the Big East and into a second-place tie with Syracuse and Louisville – one game behind Georgetown.
Both teams shot less than 30 percent in a ragged first half that saw more combined turnovers (15) than field goals (13). After Marquette took an early second-half lead, Hilliard drained a 3-pointer to cap an 18-8 run that left Villanova with a 46-38 advantage with 7:43 remaining.
The Wildcats stretched the margin to 11 points moments later but Cadougan scored nine points over the final 2:47 to make it interesting. Jamil Wilson’s layup moved the Golden Eagles with 58-54 with 16 seconds left, but Daniel Ochefu – a 42 percent foul shooter – hit both of his free throws with nine seconds remaining to preserve the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Villanova and Marquette combined to shoot 13-of-46 (28.3 percent) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, but hit 28 of their 48 field goal attempts (58.3) in the second half. … The Wildcats finished 4-of-13 beyond the arc, only the fourth time this season they have won a game in which they made fewer than six 3-pointers. … The Golden Eagles entered Saturday with a 736-351 advantage in bench points this season, but only outscored Villanova 21-17 in this contest.
