Marquette 49, No. 16 Georgetown 48: Davante Gardner and Vander Blue finished with 12 points apiece and the Hoyas' Greg Whittington missed his last free-throw attempt with two seconds remaining as the Golden Eagles posted their 18th consecutive home victory.
Trent Lockett had nine points and 10 rebounds for Marquette (11-3, 2-0 Big East), which overcame a porous 4-for-17 effort from 3-point range to win its fourth in a row.
Markel Starks scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half for Georgetown (10-2, 0-1), which saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end.
After Blue was whistled for a charge, Georgetown had a chance to take the lead with 24 seconds remaining. Otto Porter Jr. was double-teamed and fed a wide-open Jabril Trawick, who misfired on a 3-point attempt from the corner.
Whittington was fouled by Lockett on a last-second 3-point attempt from the corner. The sophomore forward, who calmly sank his first two free throws before Marquette called a timeout, hit the back iron on the last shot to essentially end the game.
GAME NOTEBOOK: To say that the teams struggled from the start would be an understatement. Georgetown was 3-for-15 from the field and Marquette 3-for-17 after the first 12 minutes. ... Blue went 4-for-8 from the field in the first half while the rest of the Golden Eagles were a dismal 3-for-19. ... Georgetown, which returned to the court for the first time since Dec. 22, lost for only the second time in its last 11 conference openers.
