Arizona State 87, Arizona 80: Jonathan Gilling scored a career-high 21 points, and Trent Lockett and Carrick Felix also scored 21 apiece as the host Sun Devils stunned the Wildcats.

Gilling made five 3-pointers, including one that gave Arizona State (10-20, 6-12 Pac-12) a four-point lead with 1:11 remaining as the Sun Devils defeated the Wildcats for only the eighth time in the last 36 meetings.

Kyle Fogg scored 23 points and Brendon Lavender matched career-highs with 18 points and six 3-point baskets to pace Arizona (21-10, 12-6 Pac-12). Solomon Hill scored 16 points and Jesse Perry added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, who lost for just the second time in 10 games.

The loss could prove costly on selection Sunday for Arizona if the Wildcats fail to win the Pac-12 tournament title. Arizona receives a first-round bye at the conference tournament, while Arizona State opens against Stanford on Wednesday.

Josiah Turner’s driving hoop gave Arizona a 70-68 lead with 5:58 to play but the Sun Devils responded with six straight points to take the lead for good. The Wildcats pulled within 78-77 on three free throws by Fogg, before Gilling drained the 3-pointer that started a game-ending 9-3 run.

The Sun Devils were 22 of 24 from the free-throw line with Lockett making four and Felix sinking two in the final 31 seconds.

Gilling had 13 first-half points on four-of-four shooting but Arizona closed the half with an 8-2 run to take a 44-36 halftime advantage.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Lavender also had six 3-pointers in a December contest against Bryant… Felix returned from a two-game absence due to a virus to notch his fourth 20-point game of the season… The 20-point outing was Fogg’s second in a row and sixth of the season… Gilling had just one point when Arizona State lost to Arizona on Dec. 31.
