Clint Chapman had 20 points and nine rebounds as Texas snapped a two-game losing streak with an easy 74-57 victory over visiting Texas Tech on Saturday.
The Longhorns (14-9, 4-6 Big 12) won for only the second time in the past seven games and did most of their damage from the free throw line, where they outscored the Red Raiders by 16 points.
Texas finished 25 for 31 from the line, led by Chapman’s 8-for-8 effort.
Freshman Sheldon McClellan and Big 12 leading scorer J’Covan Brown added 17 points apiece for the Longhorns, who defeated Texas Tech at home for the 16th consecutive time.
Ty Nurse scored 18 points for the Red Raiders (7-5, 0-10), who lost by double digits for the fifth straight game and the eighth time in conference play.
Freshman Jordan Tolbert, Texas Tech’s leading scorer who had been slumping lately, finished with 12 points for only his second double-figure effort in the past nine games.
Texas attacked the basket relentlessly from the beginning. During a seven-minute stretch in the first half, the Longhorns went on an 18-13 run when 16 of the points came on free throws.
By halftime, Texas had opened up a 40-25 advantage on the strength of 19-of-22 shooting from the line.
After the break, the Longhorns’ lead swelled to 22 points when McClellan hit a jumper that made it 51-29 with 14:24 left.
