Jorge Gutierrez’s 21 points led four California starters in double figures as the Golden Bears won their Pac-10 opener, 65-61, over Arizona State on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
California (8-7, 1-2 Pac 10) scored the first seven points of the game, capped by a fastbreak dunk by Allen Crabbe. The Golden Bears had a 21-7 lead before Arizona State (8-7, 1-3) rebounded late. The Sun Devils trailed, 31-23, at halftime.
Ty Abbott scored five of his 18 points early in the second half as Arizona State opened with a 7-0 run. But California recovered and held the Sun Devils at arm’s length the rest of the way.
Crabbe finished with 17 points and eight rebounds for California, followed by Mark Sanders-Frison’s 13 points and 11 boards. Harper Kemp had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Abbott also finished with six rebounds for Arizona State. Rihards Kuksiks chipped in 10 points.
