Jamie Vanderbeken hit a 35-footer at the buzzer - his only 3-point attempt of the game - to provide Iowa State a 91-88 victory over Creighton on Sunday in a game in which former Cyclones coach Greg McDermott returned after leaving at the end of last season for the Bluejays.
Vanderbeken's miraculous shot came after Creighton's Antoine Young converted two free throws with just over a second to play.
McDermott and Creighton (3-1) held a 74-70 lead with 6 1/2 minutes left, but freshman Melvin Ejim knocked down a short jumper then drained a 3-pointer for a 77-74 Cyclones lead with 5 1/2 minutes left. Jake Anderson sank a 3-pointer with a shot from the arc that gave Iowa State a five-point edge with 68 seconds to play.
Diante Garrett scored 28 points and shot 5-of-12 from the arc and added seven assists for Iowa State. Ejim scored 22 on 9-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-2 on 3-pointers, while Anderson collected three shots from the arc. The Cyclones improved to 4-0 under new coach and alum Fred Hoiberg, and shot 13-of-26 from the arc.
Young scored 21 points and Lawson added 20 and the duo combined for seven 3-pointers for the Bluejays, who shot 50 percent from the floor and were 14-of-27 from the 3-point line.
Iowa State heads home to face Kennesaw State on Wednesday. Creighton faces those same Owls two days later in Omaha.
