Spurs 101, Grizzlies 94: Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw scored 14 points apiece as San Antonio opened the season with a victory over visiting Memphis in a rematch of the Western Conference finals.
Tony Parker had 13 points and nine assists, and Manu Ginobli added 12 points, five assists and four rebounds for the Spurs in their first game since narrowly losing to the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. Franchise fixture Tim Duncan had three points and six rebounds before leaving with a chest contusion and his status is unknown for Friday’s game at the Los Angeles Lakers.
Tony Allen scored 15 points, Marc Gasol had 14 points and nine rebounds and Mike Conley added 14 points and seven assists as the Grizzlies lost their first game under new coach Dave Joerger. Power forward Zach Randolph was held to two points on 1-of-6 shooting.
After Memphis took a 20-18 lead through a tentative first quarter, San Antonio outscored the Grizzlies 30-7 to take a 48-27 halftime lead. Backup point guard Patty Mills led the charge, going 4-for-4 from the field — including 3-for-3 from 3-point range — to score all 12 of his points in the second quarter.
Duncan left in the third quarter after a collision with Allen, and Memphis closed the period with a 7-2 run to climb within 72-58. The Grizzlies stayed hot to begin the fourth quarter to make it a five-point game with seven minutes to play, but Leonard took a steal the length of the court for a layup to push the lead back to double digits with 3:29 left to play and the Spurs held on from there.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Memphis lost its 13th season opener in a row since the franchise moved from Vancouver before the 2001-02 season. … Eleven Spurs players scored in the first half. … Mike Miller, who helped Miami beat San Antonio for the title, had 11 points in his return to Memphis, where he played from 2003-08.
