Christian Yelich and Mark Canha each homered during a four-run first inning as the visiting Milwaukee Brewers extended their season-best winning streak to nine games with a 6-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night.
Starter Wade Miley (7-3) allowed solo homers to Ian Happ and Patrick Wisdom, plus two other hits, over six strong innings for the Brewers, who increased their National League Central lead over the second-place Cubs to five games.
Meanwhile, Yelich was one of four players with two hits for Milwaukee, which has averaged 7.1 runs per game during its longest winning streak since an 11-game run in 2021.
Winners of 13 of their last 16 games, the Brewers wasted no time getting to Chicago starter Jameson Taillon (7-9).
Three pitches into the game, Yelich went deep into the left-center-field bleachers for his 17th home run of the season. Two batters later, rookie Sal Frelick singled, went to third on Willy Adames' infield single that featured a throwing error by Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson and scored via Rowdy Tellez's sacrifice fly.
Canha, who has six hits in the last four games, then delivered the big blow of the frame with his two-run drive high into the left field bleachers.
Chicago, which managed just five hits and did not have a plate appearance with runners in scoring position, got on the board during its half of the first on Happ's 16th homer of the season.
However, the Brewers got that run back in the second when Yelich reached on an infield single and scored on William Contreras' base hit to make it 5-1.
Wisdom's line-drive homer in the fifth made it a 5-2 game.
Taillon ended up lasting six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits. He didn't issue a walk while striking out six.
The Brewers added on in the seventh thanks to doubles off Drew Smyly from Contreras and Adames.
Milwaukee is 5-3 against the Cubs this season and has won three straight games at Wrigley Field.
