Chace Stanback scored 29 points and was 8-for-9 from 3-point range as No. 23 UNLV was 14-for-23 from beyond the arc en route to its third straight victory, 81-63 over visiting Louisiana-Monroe on Monday.
UNLV led 37-27 at halftime, but pulled away with a big run to start the second half. The Runnin’ Rebels (12-2) scored the first 11 points of the half, and capped a 15-2 spurt with two of Oscar Bellfield’s 10 points on a dunk five minutes in that made it 52-29.
Stanback capped his fantastic evening with a 27-foot 3-pointer with less than a minute to play.
Stanback and Hugh Mingo seemed to have a personal long-range shooting contest going late in the first half. They each knocked down a pair of 3-pointers during a minute and a half stretch with Mingo’s 24-footer getting the Warhawks within 25-23.
Stanback, who hit all five of his 3-point attempts in the first half, answered immediately with a three, which started UNLV on a 12-4, half-closing spurt that included a Carlos Lopez (12 points) dunk to give the hosts their biggest first-half lead at 37-26.
Steve McLellan led Louisiana-Monroe (1-11) with 16 points and Mingo added 15.
