Stanford’s Josh Owens scored with 29 seconds left and the Cardinal handed No. 18 Washington its first Pac-10 loss Thursday with a 58-56 win.
Washington (12-4, 4-1) had a chance to force overtime, but Justin Holiday’s 12-foot shot fell short at the buzzer. Owens had 14 points and five rebounds for Stanford (10-5, 3-1), which improved to 8-0 at home. Jeremy Green scored 12 points, while Dwight Powell added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Stanford led 29-28 at halftime, the first time Washington has trailed at the half this season. Washington’s Isaiah Thomas had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Holiday added 15 points. Aziz N’Diaye grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies, who had won six straight.
The loss ended Washington’s 11-game Pac-10 winning streak, its longest since the conference was formed in 1978.
Stanford boasts the Pac-10’s best defense, and the Cardinal limited Washington to 36 percent (21 of 58) shooting from the field. After Thomas gave Washington an 11-point lead with 10:37 left, Stanford answered with a 15-2 run to lead 53-51 with 3:49 remaining.
