No. 1 Duke appears deep enough to dominate even when shorthanded. The Blue Devils, playing without star freshman point guard Kyrie Irving, blew out St. Louis 84-47, Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Irving, Duke's leading scorer, missed his second straight game with right foot injury that will keep him sidelined indefinitely. Irving had his foot in a hard cast Friday, and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski suggested the injury could be season-ending.
The Blue Devils didn't need Irving against a St. Louis team picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the Atlantic 10. Duke jumped out a 28-8 lead and had complete control of the game at half, leading 40-16.
Nolan Smith had a game-high 22 points, and Kyle Singler added 21 for the Blue Devils, who improved to 10-0 with their 83rd consecutive home win over non-conference competition.
Mike McCall led the Billikens (3-4) with 15 points. McCall was only Billiken in double-figures.
The Blue Devils have winnable games against Elon (Dec. 20) and at North Carolina-Greensboro (Dec. 29), before opening ACC play against Miami on Jan. 2.
St. Louis will try to bounce back at home against Jacksonville Wednesday.
