After surviving an early push from a determined Austin Peay squad, Purdue hung on and kept its unbeaten record intact with an 87-65 victory Tuesday at West Lafayette, Ind., during the second game of the Chicago Tournament Challenge.
The eighth-ranked Boilermakers (4-0) had trouble with Austin Peay early on, and the Governors (2-3) took advantage to lead 15-14 with 8:49 remaining in the first half.
But Purdue responded, took the lead, and stretched its advantage to eight points, 38-30, at halftime.
A 3-pointer by D.J. Byrd and basket by Terone Johnson gave Purdue a 5-0 run to start the second half, widening the lead to 43-30, and the Boilermakers never looked back from there.
JaJuan Johnson paced Purdue with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and E’Twaun Moore added 17 points and six rebounds for the Boilermakers, who travel to Hoffman Estates, Ill., for the next two games of the challenge against Southern Illinois on Friday and either Richmond or Wright State on Saturday.
Tyshwan Edmondson led Austin Peay with 16 points.
