Marcus Carr scored a game-high 21 points and Brandon Johnson registered 13 points and 10 rebounds as Minnesota defeated Nebraska 79-61 on Monday night in Minneapolis to snap a three-game losing streak.

Minnesota (12-7, 5-7 Big Ten) overcame 30.3 percent second-half shooting and an 8-for-36 (22.2 percent) overall showing from long range to hold off Nebraska, which trailed by as many as 20 but drew within single digits down the stretch before fading.

Playing their second game since returning from a 27-day layoff caused by COVID-19 pandemic concerns within the program, the Cornhuskers took their seventh consecutive defeat. Nebraska (4-10, 0-7) shot 36.8 percent from the floor.

Junior Lat Mayen matched his career high with 15 points to boost the Cornhuskers while Shamiel Stevenson followed with 14.

Nebraska's leading scorer, Teddy Allen, who is averaging 17.2 points, warmed up but missed the game due to an internal discipline issue. According to reports, Allen is expected to play when the Cornhuskers host No. 21 Wisconsin on Wednesday night. Trevor Lakes started in place of Allen and played six scoreless minuets.

Nebraska has lost 23 straight Big Ten regular-season games and remains in search of its first conference victory since Jan. 7, 2020.

Capitalizing on a stretch of 17 straight Golden Gophers misses from the field, Nebraska used a 13-1 run to trim its deficit to seven points with 10:53 remaining.

A Tre' Williams 3-pointer with 10:21 to go ended a Minnesota field-goal drought of 7:33 while extending the advantage back to double digits.

Jamal Mashburn Jr. (11 points) and Gabe Kalscheur (10) also finished in double figures for the Golden Gophers, and Carr added eight assists.

Dalano Banton chipped in nine points and six assists for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska's Trey McGowens, Mayen and Stevenson each grabbed six rebounds.

Minnesota took a 45-30 lead into halftime, shooting 43.6 percent from the field compared to 33.3 percent for Nebraska. Despite navigating foul trouble -- including three fouls each on Carr and 7-footer Liam Robbins -- the Golden Gophers maintained a comfortable lead for much of the first half.
