No. 15 Miami 79, No. 19 North Carolina State 78: Reggie Johnson tipped in a missed shot with less than a second left to cap the visiting Hurricanes' comeback.
Johnson, who was one of five Hurricanes in double figures with 15 points, was in mid-air when he got his left hand on Shane Larkin's missed jumper as Miami (17-3, 8-0 ACC) finished the game on an 8-2 run. Durand Scott had 18 points and Julian Gamble added 16 for the Hurricanes, who have won nine straight.
C.J. Leslie had 18 points and 12 rebounds off the bench and freshman Tyler Lewis had a career-high 16 points and five assists for the Wolfpack (16-6, 5-4), who played without injured point guard Lorenzo Brown. Rodney Purvis, who added 13 points, hit the rim with his full-court desperation shot at the buzzer.
The teams traded leads and scoring runs in the second half. Gamble capped a 16-3 burst with a three-point play to give the Hurricanes a 68-62 lead with 7:09 left. Purvis answered with a jumper and 3-pointer to start a 14-3 run by the Wolfpack. Scott scored six points in the final 91 seconds while the Wolfpack missed a free throw and a jumper.
Leslie scored six points during 10-2 run that pushed the Wolfpack ahead 27-24 with 7:49 left in the first half. Purvis followed a miss with a flying dunk with 2:40 left and Lewis pushed the lead to eight before Kenny Kadji cut the lead to 40-34 at halftime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Hurricanes improved to 3-1 against ranked teams this season. ... Leslie recorded his sixth double-double of the season and third in a row. ... The loss snapped North Carolina State's 13-game home win streak.
