Tu Holloway scored 12 of his 18 points in the final 4:11 and added six rebounds and five assists as Xavier pulled out a 65-57 victory over Georgia in Athens on Tuesday.
Mark Lyons added 14 points and Kenny Frease scored 12 for the Musketeers (17-6), who were looking to build up their NCAA Tournament resume with a strong non-conference road victory. Xavier is currently tied for first place in the Atlantic-10 with Duquesne.
With his shots not falling, Holloway took to attacking the basket in the final minutes, going 10 of 10 from the free throw line down the stretch as the Musketeers pulled away. The Bulldogs had tied it on Travis Leslie’s layup at the 8:40 mark but Lyons knocked down a 3-pointer 18 seconds later and Xavier never gave the lead back.
Georgia led 27-26 at the break and went up by as much as 37-32 early in the second before the Musketeers took off on an 11-2 run led by six points from Holloway.
Trey Thompkins scored 14 points for the Bulldogs (16-7), whose own NCAA Tournament dreams have taken a hit with losses in three of the last five games.
