Red Sox 7, White Sox 6: David Ortiz drove in three runs and Jacoby Ellsbury added two RBIs as Boston completed a three-game sweep of visiting Chicago.
Stephen Drew clubbed a solo home run and Dustin Pedroia had two hits for the first-place Red Sox, who moved 5 1/2 games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Brandon Workman (4-2) earned the win in relief and Koji Uehara set down the side in the ninth for his 16th save.
Rookie Andre Rienzo (1-1) was knocked around for five runs on five hits and four walks in three innings for the White Sox. Alexei Ramirez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Conor Gillaspie drove in a pair as Chicago was swept for the first time since Aug. 2-4 at Detroit.
Ellsbury got things started with a two-run single in the second and Ortiz plated two with a double to right to cap the four-run rally. Drew pushed the advantage to 5-0 by driving a 1-1 fastball from Rienzo into the camera well in center field in the third.
The White Sox battled back with four runs in the fourth to chase starter Felix Doubront, but the Red Sox added two more in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-4. Tyler Flowers’ solo home run in the eighth drew Chicago within a run before the Red Sox bullpen finished it off.
GAME NOTEBOOK: White Sox manager Robin Ventura was ejected in the fourth inning for arguing a play at third base. Gillaspie appeared to make a diving catch before the ball popped out of his glove as he was stretching to double up Ellsbury on third, and third base umpire Paul Nauert ruled it a ground ball instead of an out on the catch. … Doubront was charged with four runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings, ending a string of 11 straight quality starts by Boston pitchers. … The Red Sox welcome AL Central-leading Detroit to town for a three-game series on Monday, while Chicago continues its road trip at New York.
