No. 8 Maryland 68, Northwestern 67: Dez Wells scored 17 points, including the game-winning basket off a rebound with 1.4 seconds remaining, as the host Terrapins moved within one-half game of first-place Wisconsin in the Big Ten.
Wells' basket capped a dramatic comeback by Maryland (18-3, 6-2), which trailed by 11 points with 3 1/2 minutes to go. Freshman Melo Trimble scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as the Terrapins pulled out the win despite shooting just 40.7 percent and being outrebounded 32-27.
Freshman Bryant McIntosh scored 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Sanjay Lumpkin added 12 for Northwestern (10-10, 1-6), which lost its sixth straight game. Tre Demps added nine points for the Wildcats, who turned over the ball 17 times as Maryland finished with a 19-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
After Trimble put Maryland ahead 66-65 with a pair of free throws with 20.6 seconds remaining, Demps hit a short jumper from the left of key to put Northwestern back in front with 9.3 seconds left. The Terrapins immediately inbounded the ball and Trimble fired up a jumper that missed, but a slashing Wells tapped in the rebound for the game-winner as Northwestern failed to get off a shot before the final buzzer.
Northwestern shot 70 percent in the first half, hitting 7-of-12 3-pointers, en route to a 41-30 lead at the break. McIntosh led the way with 13 points and Lumpkin, who connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Wildcats up 25-13 at the midway mark, added six as Northwestern led by as many as 14 despite committing nine turnovers.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Trimble, who came in shooting a conference-best 88.7 percent from the free-throw line, finished 9-for-10 at the stripe. ... Maryland, which was ranked ninth in the nation in defensive rebounds (27.5), finished with just 17 compared to 26 for the Wildcats. ... Northwestern topped Maryland 22-8 in bench points.
