Penn State 55, Providence 52 (OT): Tim Frazier finished with 19 points and came up with a key steal in overtime as the Nittany Lions overcame a dreadful first half to hold off the Friars in the consolation round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Bayamon.
Frazier added nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals while Jermaine Marshall hit the go-ahead 3-pointer in the extra period for Penn State (2-1), which will meet Akron in the fifth-place game on Sunday.
Kadeem Batts had 17 points and 11 rebounds to pace Providence (2-2), which will face North Carolina-Asheville in the seventh-place game on Sunday.
After missing a potential game-winning 3-pointer from the left baseline as time expired in regulation, Marshall redeemed himself 1:35 into overtime with the go-ahead 3-pointer. Frazier stole the ball from freshman Josh Fortune on the next possession and threw ahead to Brandon Taylor as the Nittany Lions took a 50-45 lead.
Fortune made a layup to cut the deficit to 50-47 with 2:14 remaining, but the Friars could get no closer than three points the rest of the way as Frazier and D.J. Newbill combined to hit three free throws over the final 23 seconds to seal the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Penn State set a new tournament record by scoring just 14 first-half points and the teams’ 30 combined points in the first half were also the fewest ever scored in one half at this event, beating the old record by 11. … Providence coach Ed Cooley was also involved in the previous record-setting game as his Fairfield team held Chattanooga to 16 points in a half in 2008. … Friars leading scorer Bryce Cotton did not play Friday after injuring his ankle in the first-round loss to Massachusetts, leaving Providence with just five healthy scholarship players available. Fortune and guard Ted Bancroft played all 45 minutes.
