GEORGETOWN 67, VILLANOVA 46: The No. 8 Hoyas limited Villanova to only 24.6 percent shooting from the field and climbed into fourth place in the Big East.
Georgetown, which allowed Seton Hall to make 61 percent from the floor in its last game, came back strong on defense. The Hoyas pressured the Wildcats throughout the game, challenging passes with tight defense and contesting every shot. Villanova went 11 minutes without a field goal in the second half.
The Hoyas (21-6, 11-5 Big East) got balanced scoring. Otto Porter and Jason Clark both had 15 points and six rebounds. Henry Sims had 12 points and four rebounds.
Villanova (11-17, 4-12) got 19 points from Dominic Cheek but lost for the fourth straight time. Maalik Wayns, who missed the last three games due to a sprained MCL in his left knee, never found his timing and scored just three points on 1-for-12 shooting. JayVaughn Pinkston sprained an ankle early and was scoreless in 21 minutes.
The win puts Georgetown a half-game ahead of idle Cincinnati and South Florida in the race for fourth place in the conference. Cincinnati and USF play on Sunday.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Georgetown has now won eight of the last nine meetings with Villanova. ... Villanova’s previous low point total was 51. … Villanova came in as the No. 9 free throw shooting team in the nation (76.3 percent), but made only 68.2 against the Hoyas.
