CALGARY, Alberta -- Mark Giordano was glad he extended his shift in overtime against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night.
Instead of heading to the bench for a change, Giordano instead crept in off the point and took a pass from Mikael Backlund before snapping a shot into the top corner over the blocker of Chicago goalie Jeff Glass 52 second into the extra session.
The blast gave the Flames a thrilling 4-3 win in front of an appreciative New Year's Eve crowd of 19,289 fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
"To be honest, I was about to change off that rush, and I saw Backs had the puck in the corner," Giordano said. "I had a lot of time and space in the middle. I wouldn't usually shoot that one, but at the end of the shift, you try and get lucky, and I did. It wobbled, I think, on (Glass). He didn't see it, for sure."
Matthew Tkachuk scored a pair of power-play goals for the Flames, who built a 3-0 lead before the Blackhawks battled back to tie the game and send it to overtime.
"I felt like we were getting a lot of zone time, a lot of second efforts on the power play, a lot of really good looks, so it was nice for (the goals) to go in," Tkachuk said.
Giordano and Sean Monahan each had a goal and an assist for the Flames (19-16-4). Johnny Gaudreau and Backlund had two assists apiece.
"Guys are working hard in here, and we have good attitudes," said Flames goalie Mike Smith, who finished with 34 saves. "It's about time it turned for us. We've been in a lot of close hockey games and we've had bounces go against us. It was nice to see one go for us tonight and get that big win."
Jordan Oesterle, Jonathan Toews and Brandon Saad had a goal and an assist each for the Blackhawks (18-14-6).
"I think we'll take any point that we can get, but obviously we want to get both points especially at the position we're in," said Saad, who commended Glass for his 35-save performance. "He played well for us. We still gave up too many chances for him."
Glass was making just his second NHL start at the age of 32 in his hometown, two days after he made 45 saves to backstop the Blackhawks to a 4-3 overtime road win over the Edmonton Oilers.
"A pretty fun atmosphere out there," Glass said. "I've seen a lot of hockey games (at the Saddledome). It's fun to be a part of one. I would have liked to win it obviously, but it'll be one I'll remember. Probably not so fondly right now, but somewhere down the road, I'll look back and probably appreciate it."
Although the Flames carried the majority of the early play, it was the Blackhawks who nearly opened the scoring at 8:30 of the first period. Toews fired a shot from the slot on net, but Smith made a nice blocker save.
The Flames continued to pour on the pressure and were rewarded with just 1.1 seconds left in the first when Tkachuk swatted his own rebound past Glass during a man advantage for Calgary.
Tkachuk then notched another power-play goal at 4:42 of the second when he drove to the net and redirected a pass from Gaudreau past Glass.
Just 65 seconds later, Monahan converted a feed from Gaudreau for his first goal in 10 games to put the Flames up 3-0.
Oesterle notched his second goal in as many games, after going scoreless in his first 36 NHL games, at 8:37 of the middle period. He then drew an assist on a goal by Toews 56 seconds later for the second multiple-point performance of his career.
Gaudreau nearly scored to give the Flames an insurance goal with 2:40 left to play in regulation, but Glass made a nice save to turn aside his breakaway attempt.
After Toews won a faceoff in the Calgary zone, Saad shoveled a shot on net that hit Flames defenseman Travis Hamonic before bouncing past Smith to tie the game with 1:46 to go.
