DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings once again couldn't hold a third-period lead but won anyway.

Defenseman Niklas Kronwall's goal 26 seconds into overtime gave Detroit a 4-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Kronwall got his first goal of the season when he scored from the right circle and converting a pass from forward Dylan Larkin on a 2-on-1 rush for the winner.

"(Larkin) made a really nice play to get out of the zone and then he just held it and held it," Kronwall said. "When he put the pass right on my stick, I knew I had to get it on net, but I was happy when it went in."

Edmonton goalie Cam Talbot said he was partially screened by defenseman Oscar Klefbom, who was back on the play.

"I don't know how it got through him (Klefbom)," Talbot said. "I thought he (Kronwall) was going short side but it was glove side."

The goal came a few seconds after Kronwall lost the puck to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in front of the Detroit net but Nugent-Hopkins fell down and lost control of the puck.

"I think I'm one of the few goalies who likes 3-on-3, but I think it is a lot of fun. You can never relax when it is going on like that," Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard said. "Nugent-Hopkins made a great play, but our guys swarmed him, and all of a sudden it's going the other way and in the net."

Edmonton right winger Iiro Pakarinen's second goal of the game, 8:45 into the third period tied the game 3-3. He capitalized on a giveaway in his own zone by forward Darren Helm. It was Pakarinen's third goal of the season.

"We have to find a way to get some security with the lead. We didn't do that again tonight," Kronwall said.

Right winger Gustav Nyquist, left winger Tomas Tatar and Larkin had a goal and an assist each Detroit (12-8-3). Howard made 21 saves.

"I thought we played extremely well, for the first half of the game, but I wasn't happy with about the last eight minutes of the second or any of the third," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "We were immature in the second half of the game instead of doing what we needed to finish it off."

Defenseman Andrej Sekera had a goal for Edmonton (7-14-2). Talbot made 28 saves.

"It's very nice to score some goals but at the end of the night we lost the game and we can't be happy about it," Pakarinen said.

The Red Wings led 3-2 after five goals were scored in the second period.

Nyquist gave Detroit a 1-0 lead 5:11 into the second with his eighth goal. Tatar made it 2-0 with 7:53 left in the middle period with his eighth goal.

Pakarinen made it 2-1 with 4:43 left in the second period. Sekera's power-play goal with 3:14 remaining in the second tied it at 2.

The Red Wings re-took the lead on Larkin's goal with 36 seconds left in the second period. He took a backhand pass from center and captain Henrik Zetterberg, cut in off the left wing and put a backhander past Talbot. It was Larkin's ninth goal.

Kronwall put a big hit on center Mark Letestu inside the Edmonton zone along the left-wing boards a little under seven minutes into the game. Edmonton left winger Matt Hendricks received a roughing minor penalty for retaliating against Kronwall, who wasn't penalized.

NOTE: It was Edmonton's first game since losing forward Nail Yakupov, who is out two-to-four weeks, after he sustained an ankle sprain in a 4-1 road loss to the Carolina Hurricanes Wednesday. He was taken to the ice by linesman Matt MacPherson following a neutral-zone faceoff. ... Oilers coach Todd McLellan is a former assistant coach for Detroit. ... The Red Wings were without RW Johan Franzen (concussion) and D Kyle Quincey (ankle). ... In addition to Yakupov, Edmonton was missing C Connor McDavid (collarbone), LW Rob Klinkhammer lower body) and D Justin Schultz (back).

... Scratched for Detroit were C Joakim Andersson and D Jakub Kindl.
