Flyers 7, Red Wings 2: Brayden Schenn scored a pair of goals and set up another as Philadelphia extended its winning streak against Detroit at home to 10 games.
Wayne Simmonds had a goal and two assists while defenseman Nicklas Grossmann, Matt Read, Zac Rinaldo and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare also tallied and captain Claude Giroux set up two scores. Steve Mason turned aside 31 shots – stopping 17-of-18 he faced in the second period – for Philadelphia, which snapped a four-game winless streak.
Justin Abdelkader scored his 19th goal and Erik Cole tallied his first with the Red Wings, who began a four-game road trip with their fourth loss in the last five contests. Jimmy Howard made 29 saves for Detroit, which allowed three power-play goals and has surrendered at least one in nine consecutive games.
The Flyers controlled the first period with a 15-4 edge in shots and Simmonds opened the scoring by deflecting defenseman Mark Streit’s shot on the power play at 5:22. Grossmann doubled the lead with 2:53 left in the session, taking a nifty pass from Sean Couturier on the rush and moving in alone to beat Howard from the slot.
Abdelkader scored in the breakaway 4:14 into the second before Schenn answered with the man advantage, flipping in a rebound with 6:21 left in the period. Schenn, who had one goal in his previous 19 games, extended the lead to three just 11 seconds into the final session and Bellemare stretched it to 5-1 at 8:22.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Schenn completed what appeared to be his first career hat trick early in the third and caps were thrown on the ice to celebrate, but it was announced shortly after that his apparent goal in the first period was switched to Simmonds. … Philadelphia D Michael Del Zotto (upper body) sat out for the fourth straight game and the team announced F R.J. Umberger would miss the rest of the season and undergo hip and abdominal surgery. … Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg had an assist for his eighth point in the last six games. … Detroit has not won at Philadelphia since Jan. 25, 1997.
