Avalanche 4, Hurricanes 3: Defenseman Zach Redmond scored his second goal with 1:35 left to play as Colorado continued its home dominance over Carolina.
Jarome Iginla netted the tying goal with 5:17 remaining before setting up Redmond's game-winner as the Avalanche made it 10 consecutive victories over the Hurricanes at the Pepsi Center. Defenseman Erik Johnson also scored and Nathan MacKinnon collected three assists to back Calvin Pickard, who stopped all 17 shots after replacing Reto Berra (seven saves).
Defenseman John-Michael Liles, Nathan Gerbe and Andrej Nestrasil scored for Carolina, which lost for the 10th time in 12 games (2-8-2) away from home. Cam Ward turned aside 31 shots for the Hurricanes, whose last win in Colorado came in February 1996 - when the franchise was located in Hartford, Conn.
The Avalanche pulled within a goal just before the 8 1/2 minute mark of the second period as MacKinnon sent a pass to Johnson, who lined up a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Iginla snapped a 12-game goalless drought, beating a screened Ward to tie it, before sliding a pass to an oncoming Redmond for a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle.
Skinner set up Liles for a blast from the slot to open the scoring 3:48 into the contest and Gerbe doubled the lead 82 seconds later, corralling a loose puck after scrum and beating a screened Berra. Redmond cut the deficit in half when his crossing pass caromed off a defender's skate and in the net midway through the period, but Nestrasil restored the two-goal lead almost six minutes later and chased Berra in the process.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Nestrasil made his debut with the Hurricanes after he was claimed off waivers earlier in the week from the Detroit Red Wings, where he had two assists in 13 career games. ... With Fs Alex Tanguay (facial facture), Dennis Everberg (separated shoulder) and John Mitchell (leg) all sidelined, the Avalanche promoted Andrew Agozzino, Ben Street and Tomas Vincour, who played on the same line at Lake Erie of the American Hockey League. ... Skinner has two goals and three assists during a three-game point streak.
