Sharks 4, Devils 2: Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski each scored a goal and set up two others as San Jose held on to spoil New Jersey's home opener.
Patrick Marleau recorded a tally and an assist while Joe Thornton added an empty-net goal for his 1,200th career point as the Sharks extended their season-opening point streak to five games (4-0-1). Antti Niemi turned aside 35 shots for San Jose, which improved to 2-0-1 on its five-game road trip.
Mike Cammalleri and Adam Henrique scored for the Devils, who fell to 17-9-6 in home openers - including a 2-4-2 mark at Prudential Center. Cory Schneider finished with 28 saves as New Jersey lost its second straight after beginning the campaign with three victories.
Pavelski opened the scoring with 2:07 remaining in the first period, burying the rebound of Couture's shot from the doorstep while on the power play. San Jose doubled its lead during another man advantage at nearly the exact same time in the second session as Couture beat Schneider from the right hash marks at 17:52.
Marleau continued his usual strong start to the season 96 seconds into the third, when he fired a shot past Schneider from the top of the right faceoff circle. Cammalleri got New Jersey on the board at the eight-minute mark by one-timing a cross-slot pass from Jaromir Jagr past Niemi and Henrique cut the deficit to 3-2 just 4:10 later as his pass attempt from the left circle caromed off Sharks defenseman Matt Irwin and into the net.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Jose C Tommy Wingels was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped up by New Jersey D Eric Gelinas during a breakaway with 3:44 left in the third period but was denied by Schneider. ... Jagr's assist was the 1,053rd of his career, putting him 10 behind Steve Yzerman for seventh place in NHL history. Thornton pulled even with Dino Ciccarelli for 45th on the all-time points list. ... Marleau has netted a goal in four of his first five games this season after scoring in seven of his first eight contests last campaign and opening 2012-13 by tallying nine times during a five-game goal-scoring streak.
