Avalanche 2, Bruins 1: Daniel Briere scored his 300th career goal with four-tenths of a second remaining in the third period as visiting Colorado mustered just enough offense to record its first victory.
Nearly five minutes after officials disallowed the Avalanche's apparent go-ahead tally 7:13 into the third period, Reto Berra denied Milan Lucic from point-blank range to keep the contest tied at 1-1. Briere provided the final salvo by alertly knocking down defenseman Jan Hejda's shot from the point before tucking the loose puck inside the right post as Colorado improved to 8-0-1 in its last nine visits to Boston.
Jamie McGinn tallied to end a season-opening 143:27 scoreless stretch for the Avalanche, who were shut out in both ends of a home-and-home series against Minnesota. Berra turned aside 27 shots in his first start - and second appearance - of the young campaign.
Loui Eriksson scored a power-play goal and Niklas Svedberg finished with 28 saves in his second career start for the Bruins, who have dropped three in a row and netted just four tallies in as many games this season. Carl Soderberg notched his team-leading third assist while Reilly Smith also recorded a point in the loss.
Colorado ended its pronounced scoring woes as defenseman Tyson Barrie pinched in, forcing a turnover before McGinn wired the puck from the right faceoff circle just inside the near post at 3:28 of the second period. Eriksson answered nearly 4 1/2 minutes later as he settled a nifty backhand feed from Soderberg before tapping the puck past Berra.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Avalanche appeared to claim a 2-1 lead at 7:13 of the third period, but officials disallowed the goal after deeming that C Ryan O'Reilly deflected the puck with his stick above the crossbar, sending it caroming off the skate of RW Dennis Everberg and into the net. ... Colorado RW Jarome Iginla received a warm ovation during the introduction of the starting lineups. The veteran shared the team lead of 30 goals for Boston last season. ... Bruins C David Krejci registered one shot on goal and won 8-of-16 faceoffs in his season debut. The 29-year-old missed the team's previous three games with an undisclosed injury sustained during a preseason contest earlier this month.
