Kings 3, Rangers 2 (2OT): Defenseman Alec Martinez scored 14:43 into double overtime as host Los Angeles won Game 5 to capture its second Stanley Cup title in three years.

New York blue-liner Ryan McDonagh and Los Angeles rookie Tyler Toffoli each drew iron with their shots in the first overtime while Mats Zuccarello and Jeff Carter suffered the same fate with their deflections in the second. The Kings ended the wild affair as Toffoli's hard shot from above the right faceoff circle was kicked out by Henrik Lundqvist (48 saves), but Martinez deposited the puck into the open left side of the net to set off a wild celebration.

Martinez also netted the series-clinching tally against Chicago in the Western Conference final. His overtime Cup-clinching goal was the first since Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane provided the honors against Philadelphia in 2010.

Former Ranger Marian Gaborik scored his NHL-leading 14th goal and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Justin Williams also tallied for the Kings, who required overtime to win three of the four contests in the series. The championship is the second in franchise history as Los Angeles dispatched New Jersey in six games in 2012.

Chris Kreider netted his fifth goal of the postseason - and third on the power play - and Brian Boyle scored a short-handed tally for New York. The Rangers were eliminated after the contest spanned past midnight on the East Coast, marking the 20th anniversary of the team winning Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final versus Vancouver.

With Dominic Moore serving a hooking penalty and the contest tied at 1-1, Carl Hagelin pushed the puck from along the right-wing boards to the middle of the ice. Boyle skated into it and weaved toward the left circle before wristing a shot that beat Jonathan Quick (28 saves) with 30 seconds remaining in the second period. Los Angeles answered during a man advantage at 7:56 of the third as defenseman Drew Doughty's wrist shot from the right circle handcuffed Lundqvist, allowing Gaborik to tap the puck home.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The multi-overtime contest was the first clincher in a Stanley Cup final since New Jersey defeated Dallas in Game 6 in two extra sessions in 2000. ... Gaborik trails Hall-of-Famer Wayne Gretzky by one goal for the franchise record. Gretzky set the mark in 1993. ... Williams drew first blood 6:04 into the first period by locating the puck in a scrum before extending his stick and backhanding the puck along the ice and past Lundqvist. With two goals and five assists, Williams led all skaters with seven points in the Stanley Cup final. ... McDonagh celebrated his 25th birthday by notching an assist on Kreider's goal with 4:23 remaining in the second. McDonagh became the first player to record a point on his birthday in a Stanley Cup final since Edmonton's Jari Kurri in 1990.
