Kings 3, Rangers 0: Jonathan Quick stopped all 32 shots he faced and Jeff Carter scored with less than one second remaining in the first period as visiting Los Angeles moved within one victory of its second Stanley Cup title in three years.

Defenseman Jake Muzzin netted a power-play goal in the second session and Mike Richards also tallied for the Kings, who look to capture the Cup on the road with a triumph in Game 4 on Wednesday. Two years ago, Los Angeles also won Games 1 and 2 in overtime before posting a 4-0 shutout against New Jersey in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final.

Quick highlighted his ninth career postseason blanking and second of the 2014 playoffs by making a brilliant save with the paddle of his stick to deny Mats Zuccarello at the left post midway through the first period. The Connecticut native, who was making his first career start at Madison Square Garden, made 30 saves in a first-round shutout victory over San Jose on April 26.

Los Angeles seized its first official lead in the series when Justin Williams set up Carter, who wristed a shot from inside the right faceoff circle that caromed off the skate of Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi and the left arm of Henrik Lundqvist (12 saves) before settling into the net just before time expired.

The Kings doubled the advantage 4:17 into the second as Muzzin's shot from the point glanced off New York's Martin St. Louis and past Lundqvist, who was screened by Carter on the play. Richards provided insurance with 2:46 left in the session as he deposited a loose puck inside the left post after his attempted pass to Trevor Lewis on a 2-on-1 rush was denied by Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Williams, who had one assist, has scored two goals and set up seven others during his five-game point streak. ... New York, which went 0-for-6 on the power play, has failed on 32 consecutive opportunities in its last nine home games. ...
